SKIRTS IN SPORTS

This is an interactive website that I created that is the home to essays on topics about women in the sport industry.  The website introduces me as a writer and my relationship to this topic on female involvement in sports.  I have been a competitive athlete for 12 years and will continue my career in sports as I graduate from Michigan with a Sport Management degree.

I decided to title the site Skirts in Sports: The Women Who Play, not only to emphasize the irony of language, but to reclaim the meaning of "skirts."  As a modern woman in an industry plagued with traditional men, I refer to women as "skirts," to honor the women who paved the way for women in athletics, (in skirts), and to elicit change amongst the future of women in sports to continue to fight for gender equity.

The topics of the essays that I have chosen to touch upon all pertain to women in sport, more specifically: female groundbreakers, ideal image, unfair payment, and the underrepresentation of women in the sport industry.  I wanted to not only comment on the harsh realities of women in sport, but also emphasize what women are doing today to combat these industry issues of inequity.  I am proud of the outcome of the site and I hope that it reaches an audience of women who are interested in, or a part of, the sport industry.  To access the site click on the image.
